During the early church, Christians living in the Roman Empire were widely persecuted. Many were killed and tortured, because they dare to identify with Jesus. During this time, Christians would often identify themselves to other Christians by discretely drawing a fish symbol in dirt. This became a way to let other followers of Jesus know that they were a "fisher of men", just like their Savior.
